As a new parent, I knew that I wanted to read to my baby. But I didn't always know what to read. This latest collaboration by Cynthia Rylant and Diane Goode would have been an excellent choice. As Rylant explores baby's delicate features and exciting growth, she succinctly, lyrically expresses the caregiver's love for the baby. (Goode's illustrations show this love acted out in the caregiving tasks performed by both parents and grandparents.) Baby's face, first teeth, first steps, bath time, and bedtime all are topics of Rylant's buoyant, rhyming verse and Goode's soft, joyous illustrations. Older children are likely to find this book to be too syrupy sweet. However, young children often like to be told how special they are and to see how their parents loved them during their babyhood. With these children--and with new parents--it is sure to be a hit.
