Children's Literature Review:
Exit Here is too bleak to be read quickly and too dark to be enjoyed. Travis has returned home from Hawaii following a tragedy he cannot seem to get over. A girl is dead and his old life does not seem like much of one anymore. He tries to return to his old haunts, past times, and friends, but he begins to see the flaws he never noticed before, as well as discovering the betrayals and general pointlessness of an existence motivated by sex and drugs. The book and its characters are unrelentingly gritty. Everyone seems to be drowning in their own problems, and reading it starts to make the reader feel like he or she is suffocating. You just start to want a joke, a bright spot, or some kind of relief. While there are some amusing pop culture references, ultimately even the humor is dark and sleazy. It is a relief to read the last of the over 400 page book, but it is a story that stays with you.
