An unexpected cult hit from the early 1980s, Bill Forsyth's Local Hero hearkened back to Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's I Know Where I'm Going -- both quirky comedies set in Scotland that derived their humor from characters and situations rather than obvious jokes. The film, produced by David Puttnam, was a sleeper hit and went on to find a wide international audience. The DVD edition is a solid transfer of a recent film, presented in its matted, 1.85:1 aspect ratio on one side and full-screen on the other. The letterboxed image is to be preferred, containing a fair amount of picture information on the sides that is cut off in the full-screen edition, on which every image appears artificially enlarged. The audio is identical on each, very clean and defined, and the image has beautiful resolution.
