The Tale of Despereaux Deluxe Movie Storybook
October 14, 2008
Description:
Now adapted for the big screen by Universal Pictures, DiCamillo's Newbery Medal-winning book comes to vivid life in this deluxe movie picture book. Each spread features a paper novelty and a spectacular pop-up surprise, along with character information, sidebars, flaps, and other novelty features. Key scenes from the animated film, opening in theaters on December 19th, are also highlighted.
Children's Literature Review:
These digitally created illustrations from the movie show the main events that lead the big-eared little mouse, Despereaux, to set the princess free. The scene from the kitchen includes a pop-up of Boldo, the genie made of vegetable and herbs. There is a splendid pop-up castle at the end of the story. In between, there are lift-the-flaps, a flip book, and the storybook about the prince and princess that Despereaux reads rather than eats. The text is essentially a summary of what happens in the movie. Scenes include Despereaux speaking to Princess Pea, standing before the Mouse Council, and in the dungeon. It is definitely not the Newbery Award winning novel. With the removable flipbook and the fragile pop-ups, this is not a library purchase. Rather, it is a gift book, or a souvenir book of the movie.
