How Do Dinosaurs Go to School?
July 01, 2007
Description:
Everyone's favorite dinosaurs are back -- and this time they are going to school. More fun dinosaur antics await. These prehistoric pupils are in a class of their own! As in their previous books, Yolen and Teague capture children's rambunctious natures with playful read-aloud verse and wonderfully amusing pictures.
Children's Literature Review:
A children's book can let young children know the rules about school in a playful way. That is exactly the plan in Jane Yolen's and Mark Teagues' eighth collaboration. As the giant reptiles enter school, the author poses a string of rhythmic questions that point to behavior one might expect from a dinosaur. When he gets to the school does he roughhouse and punch? Does he make a quick grab for a classmate's packed lunch? Illustrations show these oversized students modeling rude behaviors, from being late to talking out of turn. Each picture provides an opportunity for giggles and conversation about correct behaviors. Then questions turn to answers near the book's end as positive commentary and positive behaviors show tranquil dinosaurs who help classmates, challenge bullies, and clean up the class.
