Description:
A gripping tale of bacterial poisoning, product tampering, and corporate malevolence by the dean of medical thrillers. After his son dies from poisoning caused by "E. coli" bacteria, surgeon Kim Regis investigates and comes up against a code of silence more impenetrable that anything he has ever encountered in the medical world.
Review: Most people know a little something about the e.coli bacteria because of the problems with undercooked meat. People probably don't realize the severity of what can happen when certain strains of the bacteria are unleashed in the body. This story shows exactly what happens, unfortunately to a ten-year-old girl. Her father, a surgeon, is devastated because despite all his skills, he can do nothing to save her. What starts out as a story of individuals and their relationships soon becomes a major indictment of an industry. Cook clearly explains how the e.coli bacteria can appear in meat. He follows the process from a sick cow through the slaughter, the meat processing plant, and eventually to a dead child. Meat eaters beware, you could easily become vegetarians after reading this book. KLIATT Codes: SA--Recommended for senior high school students, advanced students, and adults. Reviewed by Robin S.
