Bratfest at Tiffany’s
February 05, 2008
Description:
This latest installment continues the story of an elite group of 13-year-old girls from the wealthy suburbs north of New York City, living in a sophisticated world of ferocious put-downs, fabulous gossip, and fantastic Frederic Fekkai haircuts.
Children's Literature Review:
In this ninth "Clique" novel, the Pretty Committee (PC) is OUT and the New Pretty Committee (NPC) is IN. Faced with an invasion of Briarwood boys on Octavian Country Day School's turf, Massie's alpha status dreams of eighth grade begin to fade like last year's Chanel tote. Massie announces a boyfast, that is absolutely no flirting and no texting. The girls' friendships are put to the test as one of their own is expelled from the NPC. The girls learn how to balance their own sense of self in a new world full of crushes. Lisi Harrison walks a fine line between expensive dreams of manolo shoes and designer handbags and alienating the average reader, who cannot afford Tiffany's, to an LBR status (that's Loser Beyond Repair). In the end, I hale the "Clique" novels and Lisi Harrison for her strong female characters that are as flawed as they are perfect.
