At the peak of his television-spawned popularity, Alan Alda was somewhat of a lower-level auteur, writing, directing, and starring in a series of films which maintained a low-key "grown-up" counterpoint to the increasing youth culture saturation of the movies. These films, exemplified by The Four Seasons, focused seriously on issues like divorce, mid-life crises, and fidelity. Ostensibly a comedy, humor in the form of one-liners is more subdued in favor of situations, which does not really serve the film too well. For example, a brilliant comedienne such as Carol Burnett is more or less relegated to the background as a sounding board for Alda's foibles, although she does prove herself a very talented "straight" actress. Likewise, Len Cariou displays a fine sense of character as a man who looks for love in a younger woman and struggles to reconcile his new life with his old.
