Creating an Account

Having an account with us makes future purchasing easier. Your account provides the convenience of setting up an Address Book for future ordering, enables you to track your order or view order history, create and manage a Wish List, and it also allows you access to set up and store preferences for items that you see on the Magic Shelf each time you visit.

If you have already started shopping, you have the option of Creating an Account at the end of checkout process or to continue Shopping as a Guest.

Signing in to Your Account

You may sign in to your account at any time during your visit. Just click on "Your Account" and enter your username and password. If you are shopping and begin the checkout process as a guest shopper, you will be prompted to continue shopping as a guest or sign in before completing your order with us. If you would like to create or add items to a current Wish List, you will need to sign into your account first. Items added to a shopping cart will not be retained unless you have signed into your account.

Borders Rewards members: You can sign in to your account with your existing BordersRewards.com username and password.

Product Search

Borders offers an easy-to-use search tool.

Searching for Books, Music, and DVDs
1. "What are you looking for?" Enter a keyword search term in this field (this can include an author, title or keyword).
2. Select your media type from the drop-down list:
    All Media
    Books: Title, Author, ISBN or Used
    Music: Title, Artist, Song, UPC, Used, Classical Music, Composer, Conductor, Work, or Catalog Number
    DVDs: Title, Director, Actor, UPC, or Used
3. Click "GO."

Once your initial search results are displayed, you can narrow your search results further by selecting additional search criteria including category or genre, format, special features, price, or more options. Please note that while we do carry an extensive selection of magazines, bargain books, games, gifts and stationery, and café items in our stores, we are not able to provide availability information for them online.

Advanced Search
Advanced Search allows you to enter criteria in one or more fields to further define your search and quickly locate a title. It is not necessary to enter information in multiple fields in order to perform an advanced search; however, the more specific you are in the criteria you provide, the more precise the search engine will be in the results returned to you.

Search Tips

As a general rule, unless you want to see all titles listed for an entire subject, it is best to narrow your search as much as possible. Choose search terms that best identify the item you want to find. Remember that you can use specific criteria (keyword, author, title) on the Advanced Search page to refine the results. It can also be helpful to avoid using common words like "the" or "and."

Examples:
Keyword—If you are searching for a CD and you enter the search term "classical" you will find all CDs containing performances of classical music. On the other hand if you enter the search term "classical violin" you will find only classical music selections that contain classical violin performances. Additional classical music search fields are also available in Advanced Search, allowing you to search by composer, conductor, work, and even catalog number.

In a DVD search, entering the keywords "film noir" will bring up a list of all movies listed with a subject type of "film noir."

ISBN search—Choosing ISBN search in the book category and entering 1593300522 finds one specific paperback edition of the book Beloved by Toni Morrison. To see all available editions, search for either the title or the author.

If you are searching for audio books or books on CD you have two options. You can search for the item by author, which will bring up a list of all books in all formats (hardcover, paperback, audio, etc.) and then narrow your search by choosing audio books under category or format. You may also search by entering the author's name and the word "audio" as a keyword search.

Example: "grisham audio" will return all audio books by authors with the last name of Grisham.

Search Results
Search results are automatically sorted by top matches (relevancy) so that the items that most closely match your search terms appear first. If you prefer to sort the complete results alphabetically, by bestsellers, title, price, publication date, or contributor, you may do so by selecting the appropriate choice from the "sort by" drop-down menu on the right side of the screen.

You can view your results as a set of cover images or as a list. Cover is the default view. However, if you prefer to see a list, click on the "view as list" link above or below the search results. On the cover view, hold your mouse over the image to see title information and links for more info. Each cover also links to the title detail page when clicked.

Search results will show all titles that match your search. You'll see the title, author/artist, format (hardcover, paperback, CD, DVD), and the suggested list price. Please note that prices may not reflect any available in-store discounts. Since publishers and labels change prices from time to time, it is possible for different stores to carry the same item at slightly different prices (depending upon the price of the item at the time we purchased it). To view full bibliographic details on any item in the search results list, click on the title.

You have several options available on search results for each title:
Add to Cart: Adds the item to your shopping cart for purchase.
Check Store Invetory: Checks the availability at your local Borders store and holds the item for pick-up.
Add to Wish List: Allows you to save the item in your Wish List for future purchase.

Send to a Friend
Found a specific title and want to share the details with someone else? You can! From the title detail page, provide their email address along with an optional personal message. Your email address will be automatically filled in if you are logged in. If not, you will need enter it into the "From" email box. Then click "Send."

Listen to Sample Track
Sample before you buy! To help you find the exact CD you are looking for, the title detail page includes a track list of the CD and allows you to listen to sample tracks.

If you are unable to play music samples in Windows Media format, you will need to update your browser settings:

1. Restore the default security settings on your browser (medium).

2. Enable the following settings in the IE browser: Tools -> Internet Options -> Security -> Internet Zone -> Custom Level -> Miscellaneous -> And Enable "Launch programs and files in an IFRAME" and "Navigate sub frames across different domains."

Title Availability Information

The availability estimate listed on the item detail page tells you if we have copies in stock ready to ship in one of our fulfillment centers. If the item is not in stock, the availability estimate tells you how long we think it will take for our suppliers to receive the item.

Sometimes when availability of an item has changed within the last several hours, we will alert you of a change in status in the shopping cart or as you check out. If you do see an alert of a status change in one of those places, that will reflect our most recent information on that item.

Usually Ships in 24 Hours means that as of our last warehouse update we had this item available in one of our fulfillment centers. So with standard domestic U.S. shipping, which takes 3-8 business days, a title with this availability should arrive in 4-9 business days.

Backorder - Usually Ships within 2 Weeks means that this item is not currently in stock, but more are on the way and should arrive in the warehouse in that timeframe. With standard domestic U.S. shipping, an item with this availability will then take an additional 3-8 business days to arrive.

Backorder - Usually Ships in 2-4 Weeks means that the item is backordered and is not in stock at any of our fulfillment centers, but we expect it to arrive in our warehouse within 2-4 weeks after your order. With standard domestic U.S. shipping, an item with this availability will then take an additional 3-8 business days to arrive.

Backorder - Usually Ships in 4-8 Weeks means that the item is backordered and is not in stock at any of our fulfillment centers, but we expect it to arrive in our warehouse within 4-8 weeks after your order. With standard domestic U.S. shipping, an item with this availability will then take an additional 3-8 business days to arrive.

Pre-Order means that the item is available for order and usually ships within 24 hours of the future release date. The release date is provided by the publisher and may change without notice to Borders.com. As soon as Borders.com is aware of the new release date; the item will be made available for shipment, usually within 24 hours of this date.

Reserve for In-Store Pickup

Items found on the website may, in most cases, be reserved for pickup at a local store. If an item is available in a Borders store you will see a ZIP code entry form on the upper right of the product detail page. Check an item's availability for store pickup by entering a ZIP code. A list of all stores for that area will be displayed as well as the most recent inventory information (In-Store Status) for each store. Choose the store where you would like to pick up your item and follow the instructions for processing your reservation via the online reservation form. You may reserve up to five units of a particular title. Reservation requests for multiple titles must be submitted individually. If you are interested in purchasing more than five quantity of a particular title, it is recommended that you contact your local Borders store directly.

Once you place your reservation, you will receive an email confirming the availability of the item you requested. In most cases, you will receive the email within two hours. Please wait until you receive the email confirmation before going to the store to pick up your item.

Note: Store pickup is available only in U.S. stores, excluding Borders Express, Borders Outlet, airport, and Waldenbooks locations.

Item Availability In Stores

When you check store inventory from a product detail page, you will be provided with the most current stock information for each location in the ZIP code entered. The availability information is updated daily but may not reflect store sales within the last 24 hours. For details about how to check store inventory, see the Reserve for In-Store Pickup section above.

"Likely in stock" indicates that as of 24 hours ago, there were one or more copies of this item in the store available for purchase. You have the ability to reserve this item for in-store pickup by clicking on the reserve in store button in the list of results.

"Out of stock" means that the item is either temporarily out of stock or is normally not stocked.

Items listed as "Not Yet Published" or released are not available for reserve; they may, however, be processed as a pre-order using a credit card. An item that has a "street date" will ship for delivery to arrive on the date it is released for sale by the publisher, or the "release date." If the item does not arrive on the street date the item should be tracked to see if the carrier is delivering later than expected. For more information on the order process, see Placing an Order.

Please note: We are unable to provide availability information for Borders Express, Borders Outlet, airport, or Waldenbooks locations at this time. We are also unable to search the inventory of stores outside of the United States.

While a music recording may no longer be available on one label, there is a chance that another label has acquired the rights for current distribution. You may wish to note that videos sometimes cycle through periods of availability as they change distributors or their distributor chooses to remove the products from the market to avoid overexposure. We're sorry, but we do not have information about whether an unavailable video or DVD title will become available in the future; you may wish to check back with us from time to time to see if the availability of the video or DVD has changed.

Shopping Cart

Items that you wish to purchase are placed in your virtual shopping cart. You may edit or review the items in your cart at any time by clicking on "Shopping Cart" at the top of every page. If you would like to print the details of your shopping cart, click "print cart" at the upper right-hand corner of your screen. Items are retained in your shopping cart indefinitely provided you are logged in to your account when shopping. It is also important to note that adding items to your shopping cart does not necessarily lock in the price. Items in your Shopping Cart reflect current prices. Prices may change between the time you place an item in your Shopping Cart and when you actually complete your purchase. The final price charged for any item is the price at the time you complete your purchase.

Adding or Removing Items in Shopping Cart

Choose the item that you wish to purchase. For more information on searching for products see Product Search. Once you have located your item, click "Add to Cart," located on the right-hand side of your screen. This will take you to your shopping cart where you may continue shopping or check out.

If you decide that you no longer wish to purchase an item, you can click "Remove" or adjust the quantity to zero and click "Update." To increase the quantity of an item already in your shopping cart, simply change the quantity and click "Update." If you would like to save the item for a later purchase, click "Move to Wish List."

Moving Wish List Items to Shopping Cart

Items saved to your wish list can be added directly to your shopping cart.

1. Click on "Wish List," located at the top of every page.

2. Click on "Add to Cart," next to the item you wish to purchase.

3. This will take you to your cart, where you can continue shopping or checkout.

Placing an Order

Placing an order on Borders.com couldn't be easier!

1. Locate the items you wish to purchase and add them to your shopping cart.

Don't forget items that you may have added to your Wish List: If you would like to purchase them at this time, move the items to your shopping cart. Each time you add an item to your shopping cart you will be taken directly to your shopping cart to review. If you would like to continue adding items to your order or exploring our site, click "Continue Shopping." When you are ready to complete your order, return to your shopping cart.

2. Review the items you have in your shopping cart and make any adjustments before you proceed to checkout.

You may wish to increase or decrease the quantity on a particular item, remove an item, or move an item to or from your Wish List. The availability of the item(s) and subtotal of your order (not including shipping or applicable taxes) will be displayed for you. You may also estimate shipping charges based on items in your shopping cart at this time.

Don't forget to apply any promotion codes you may have! You may apply more than one promotional code to an order. When you are ready to complete your order, click "Checkout."

If you signed into your account and have added items to your shopping cart but decide not to complete the order, these items will remain in your cart indefinitely. You may come back at any time and complete your order. When you return, sign in to your account and click "Shopping Cart." You may then complete your order. Promotional codes previously entered may no longer be valid.

It is also important to note that adding items to your shopping cart does not lock in the price. Items in your shopping cart reflect current prices. Prices may change between the time you place an item in your shopping cart and the time you complete your purchase. The final price charged for an item is the price at the time you complete your purchase.

3. After clicking "Checkout" you will be directed to a sign-in page.

You may log in to your Borders.com account or check out as a guest. Please note that only registered members who have signed in to checkout will be able to track their order online after it has been placed.

4. Next is the address page where you will enter an email address, and the shipping and billing addresses.

You are required to provide and confirm your current email address so that we can provide updates on your order status. You also have the option of either shipping to a personal address or shipping to a Borders store. (For more information on this option, see Ship to Store.) For orders shipping to a personal address, you will need to enter the billing address and shipping address (if different from the billing address). A phone number is required for both the billing and shipping address(es) in the event we need to contact you with questions concerning your order or the delivery of the shipment.

For your convenience, you can create a "Quick Checkout" profile for your current and future purchases if you find that you ship to a particular location with most purchases. For more information, see Creating/Updating a Quick Checkout Profile.

5. Next, you will be asked to choose your preferred shipping method.

Borders offers Free Standard Shipping (3-8 business days) for purchases of $25 or more of qualifying items (minus any discounts or promotions) shipped within the continental U.S. Shipping and handling charges include both per order and per item charges. Per item charges vary based on the type of item ordered and the delivery option you choose. For more information, please refer to our Shipping Rates and Information. Once you choose your shipping method you may check the Gift Options box to have your order gift wrapped and include a Free gift message. Please visit Gift Options for details.

6. Click "next" on the shipping page and you will proceed to the payment method page.

This is where you will enter your payment information as well as any gift cards, coupons, or promotional codes you may have. Don't forget to add your Borders Rewards card number so you can get credit for your qualifying purchases! Please note that only registered members who have signed in to checkout will be able to add their Borders Rewards card number to get credit for qualifying purchases. However, transactions can be added to your Borders Rewards account at a later time through the Request Credit link on the left of the Borders Rewards page.

7. The last step to placing your order is confirming the information contained on the Order Summary page.

You may edit the shipping and payment information or cancel the order. Click on "Order Now" to place the order. Please note that once an order is placed Borders is unable to cancel or modify it in any way.

8. Once the order is placed, you will see an order confirmation.

This will verify the order information and let you know that your items were successfully ordered. You will also receive a confirmation email with the details of the order, and you will be notified by email when your order ships.

Shopping As a Guest

If you prefer not to create an account with us, you are welcome to shop as a guest at Borders.com. Just add items to your cart and then proceed to checkout. You will have the option of continuing as a guest or signing into an existing account. If you do choose to complete your order as a Borders guest, please remember to print out your order confirmation and retain for your records. If you placed an order as a guest, you can still check the status of your order. Click on the "Order Status" link at the top of any page, enter the order number and the last name from the billing address to see your order details.

Gift Options

Let us wrap the gift for you! For only $3.00, we will gift wrap your order in a beautiful Borders red wrapping paper and print a FREE gift message on the packing list. During the check out process, choose your shipping method and simply check the box under "gift options". You will then have the opportunity to wrap and add a gift message to your order or just add a gift message and we will take care of the rest. Prices will not be included on the packing list.

Please note: Multiple items in an order will be wrapped individually, but not tagged for specific recipients, so remember to include in your gift message.

Not all items are eligible for gift wrap. No charge will be issued for items that can not be gift wrapped (these include plush items and gift cards).
