1LolitaLolita
by Vladimir Nabokov

It's my favorite novel, I first read it when I was 12, I studied with the Northwestern professor (Alfred Appel) who wrote the "annotated" Lolita. I am a bona fide Lolita addict. I can go toe-to-toe with any Lolita afcionado in the universe—and, recently, I did, but it would be shameless name-dropping to tell what famous, erudite novelist I impressed with my Lolita-lore.

2Listen to My HeartListen to My Heart
by Nancy Lamott

Lamott was a great cabaret singer who died in 1995, when she was only 46. I first heard about her from my friend, Terry Teachout, and while "Listen to My Heart" isn't the archetypal Lamott album—no Stephen Sondheim—it's my favorite because of her version of "Have You Got Any Castles?" Truthfully, I always thought it would be a good theme song for Tess Monaghan. ("I'll get into my seven-league boots/I'll get into my bulletproof suits/I'll get out my revolver that shoots/And rat-a-tat-a-tat/Down they go!... After all my adventures are through/And I bring home a dragon or two/You can tell all the papers that I did it because I love you!")
