![]() | Tales from the Town of Widows: And Chronicles from the Land of Menby James Cañón A sly, subversive, and profoundly moving look at religion, politics, and sexuality, set during the Colombian civil war. This book, which just came out in paperback, is a feast for anyone who relishes beautiful, intelligent writing infused with humor and humanity. |
![]() | The Painter from Shanghaiby Jennifer Cody Epstein The rampantly overused (and often undeserved) phrase "stunning debut" happens to be absolutely true in the case of this gorgeously crafted fictional tale of real-life artist Pan-Yuliang, who was sold into prostitution at the age of 9 and overcame her sordid past to become one of China's great painters. |
![]() | Ariadne Threadby Hope for Agoldensummer Another amazing band out of Athens, Georgia. Their music is a mix of front-porch bluegrass (they have a saw and they know how to play it) and folk, played with haunting simplicity and childlike whimsy. I saw them perform recently, and they were mesmerizing. The gorgeous harmonies sung by sisters Claire and Page Campbell literally gave me gooseflesh. |
![]() | America Americaby Ethan Canin A beautiful and elegiac coming-of-age story from a master storyteller. All of Canin's best work is deeply personal; this, his fourth novel, is also deeply political, with themes that resonate strongly in our current political climate. (Available in June) |
![]() | In Our Natureby José Gonzalez I loved Veneer so much, I was prepared to be disappointed by Gonzales's second album. But these 10 exquisitely pared-down yet lush tracks are every bit as stirring. |
