1Last NightLast Night

A movie about the end of the world might seem like kind of a downer. Maybe. But this 1998 Canadian film directed by Don McKellar, is the smartest, darkest, funniest downer you'll ever see. Cast includes Sandra Oh, David Cronenberg and Sarah Polley.

2Touching EvilTouching Evil

I'm a sucker for tortured heroes, and Robson Green as Dave Creegon, a cop who's survived a gunshot to the head, is my number one Byronic crush. P.S. He hunts serial killers! P.P.S. It's British! So you can feel smart watching it.

3F for FakeF For Fake

This 1974 documentary was the last major film completed by Orson Welles. People either love it or hate it. I love it. Welles explores the value of art and notions of authorship and authenticity, using his girlfriend as a prop. It's terrifically weird.

4Come On Feel the IllinoiseCome On Feel the Illinoise
by Sufjan Stevens

Sufjan Stevens has promised an album on each of the United States. So far he's done Michigan and Illinois. His folk rock ballad about John Wayne Gacy is my favorite song about a serial killer.

5AliasAlias
by Brian Michael Bendis

This fantastic comic book about a super hero-turned-PI has no connection with Mrs. Ben Affleck's old TV show. The writer, Brian Michael Bendis is one of the best writers working today. Chock full of pop culture references, wit and deeply complex characters. You can get all 21 issues in a handy one-book collection.
