James Lee Burke's Top 5 Books

These are books that I think perhaps help us to understand the times in which we are living.

The Garden of Last DaysThe Garden of Last Days
by Andre Dubus III

This is a stunning novel written by one of the most talented writers working today. His insight into the American heart is wonderful.

I'll Let You GoThe Seven Pillars of Wisdom
by T.E. Lawrence

No book, in my opinion, contains as much knowledge about the Mideast and the Islamic mind as this one. The prose is extraordinary and Lawrence himself is one of the most intriguing figures of the 20th century.

Mariette in EcstasyMariette in Ecstasy
by Ron Hansen

This novel is perhaps the best metaphysical mystery story ever written. It is also a superb allegory about the altruist surrounded by mediocrity.

Angel's TipAngel's Tip
by Alafair Burke

I may have a parental bias, but I think this is one of the best novels narrated by a NYPD detective that I have ever read.

Of Love and DustOf Love and Dust
by Ernest J. Gaines

In my opinion, this is the best novel ever written about race relations in the United States. It is also an incredible love story as well as crime story.
